چکیده

Growth chamber experiments were conducted to examine environmental parameters affecting disease development by the indigenous pathogen Bipolaris sacchari isolate LJB-1L on the invasive weed Lygodium microphyllum (Old World climbing fern). An initial experiment examined three different temperature regimes (20/15, 25/20, 30/25 C; light/dark cycle) and three different periods of leaf wetness (12, 24, 48 h). Disease incidence was significantly reduced by incubation of plants at the highest temperature regime (30/25 C) and with the shortest period of leaf wetness (12 h). Subsequent experiments concentrated on the effect of temperature, as determination of an optimal temperature for disease development might determine the best time of year for field inoculations with this fungus. When the light cycle temperature was kept constant at 30 C, a dark cycle temperature of 15 C was more conducive for disease development than 25 C based on disease incidence and area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC). A qualitative examination of conidia germination and appressorial formation in vivo indicated that these initial steps toward infection were probably not influenced by the dark cycle temperature. In vitro, temperature (range of 15–35 C) did not significantly affect conidia germination, but hyphal growth was significantly affected, with optimal growth between 25 and 30 C. 2007 Elsevier Inc. Exploratory surveys in Australia and Asia for natural enemies of Old World climbing fern, Lygodium microphyllum: Lygodiaceae

Lygodium microphyllum, Old World climbing fern, is native to the wet tropics and subtropics of the Old World and an invasive weed in southern Florida. Exploration for natural enemies of this weed was conducted between 1997 and 2002 in Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Caledonia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Two species of mites and 20 insect species were coll...

Continental Comparisons of the Interaction between Climate and the Herbivorous Mite, Floracarus Perrepae (acari: Eriophyidae)

The Old World climbing fern, Lygodium microphyllum , is an invasive weed in the Florida Everglades and the leaf roll galling mite, Floracarus perrepae , is a proposed biological control agent. Field studies were conducted for one to two years at sites in its native range in Australia, New Caledonia, and India to evaluate the effect of climate on F. perrepae . Monthly counts of the proportion of...

Matching the origin of an invasive weed for selection of a herbivore haplotype for a biological control programme.

The Florida Everglades have been invaded by an exotic weed fern, Lygodium microphyllum. Across its native distribution in the Old World tropics from Africa to Australasia it was found to have multiple location-specific haplotypes. Within this distribution, the climbing fern is attacked by a phytophagous mite, Floracarus perrepae, also with multiple haplotypes. The genetic relationship between m...

Of the four classes of herbicides commonly used on invasive plants in natural areas of Florida, the acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors, imazapyr, imazapic, and metsulfuron methyl, are the most likely...
